The Importance of Understanding Real Information vs. Misinformation and Disinformation

By Graham Vanbergen: In today’s digital age, where information is at our fingertips, it is more crucial than ever to discern between real information, misinformation, and disinformation. At ViewPublica, we are dedicated to empowering individuals, communities, and institutions with the knowledge to make informed decisions that protect our economies, democracies, and societies at large.

Why This Matters

Protecting Our Democracies

Democracies thrive on informed citizenry. When people are equipped with accurate information, they can make decisions that reflect their best interests and those of their communities. However, misinformation—false information spread without intent to deceive—can cloud judgment, leading to misguided choices in the voting booth or public debate. Worse still, disinformation—deliberately false or misleading information—can be weaponized to undermine democratic processes, erode trust in institutions, and sow division among citizens. Understanding these distinctions is critical in safeguarding the integrity of our democratic systems.

Ensuring Economic Stability

Misinformation and disinformation don’t just influence public opinion—they also have tangible effects on our economies. False narratives can drive market volatility, erode consumer confidence, and lead to poor business decisions. For instance, misinformation about financial markets, public health, or technological innovations can cause unwarranted panic or, conversely, dangerous complacency. By fostering a well-informed public, we help to create a stable economic environment where businesses can thrive, investments can grow, and communities can prosper.

Building Resilient Communities

In an interconnected world, misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly, affecting every aspect of our lives—from the decisions we make about our health and safety to the way we interact with our neighbours. By promoting media literacy and critical thinking, we aim to build resilient communities that are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the information landscape. When people can confidently identify and reject falsehoods, they contribute to a healthier, more cohesive society.

Our Mission

At ViewPublica, we believe that knowledge is power. Our mission is to educate the public on recognising and responding to misinformation and disinformation. We strive to provide individuals with the tools they need to critically assess the information they encounter daily. By fostering a more informed public, we contribute to the health of our democracies, the strength of our economies, and the well-being of our communities.

Join us in our commitment to truth, integrity, and protecting our shared future. Together, we can ensure that the information shaping our world is accurate, reliable, and constructive.
